After a thunderstorm of considerable violence the horses got away first time with Emancipation making the early running. At the Red House Birmingham drew alongside the leader and they went head to head to the furlong pole, at which point Priam made his challenge. After a fierce tussle Birmingham prevailed by 1/2 a length. He was not highly tried prior to the St Leger, winning minor races on Midlands courses. But his career spanned 38 races, winning 23 and being placed second in 6 others. Apart from his St Leger victory he won the Chester Stand Cup in 1831 and 1832, and Gold Cups at Burton and Liverpool. | Over Round 113% | ||
